Fish Passage Technologies: Protection at Hydropower Facilities (Part 6 of 11)
ثبت نشده
چکیده
he implementation of downstream mitigation for fish passage at hydropower facilities has three distinct goals: to transport fish downstream; to prevent fish from entrainment in turbine intakes; and to move fish, in a timely and safe manner, through a reservoir.1 A range of mitigation methods for downstream passage and for prevention of turbine entrainment exist, and some have been applied with more success than others. The so-called “standard” or “conventional” technologies are mainly structures meant to physically exclude or “guide” fish to a sluiceway or bypass around the project and away from turbine intakes by means of manipulating hydraulic conditions. Other “alternative” technologies attempt to “guide” fish by either attracting or repelling them by means of applying a stimulus (i.e., light, sound, electric current). Many theories have been applied to the design of downstream passage systems and further experimentation is underway in some cases (see box 4-1).

A Cabled Acoustic Telemetry System for Detecting and Tracking Juvenile Salmon: Part 1. Engineering Design and Instrumentation
In 2001 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District (OR, USA), started developing the Juvenile Salmon Acoustic Telemetry System, a nonproprietary sensing technology, to meet the needs for monitoring the survival of juvenile salmonids through eight large hydroelectric facilities within the Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS). Initial development focused on coded acoustic microtra...
متن کاملFish Passage Assessment of an Advanced Hydropower Turbine and Conventional Turbine Using Blade-Strike Modeling
Hydropower is the largest renewable energy source in the world. However, in the Columbia and Snake River basins, several species of Pacific salmon and steelhead have been listed for protection under the Endangered Species Act due to significant declines of fish population. Dam operators and design engineers are thus faced with the task of making hydroelectric facilities more fish friendly throu...
متن کاملSurvival of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts through a hydropower complex.
This study evaluated Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolt survival through the lower Penobscot River, Maine, U.S.A., and characterized relative differences in proportional use and survival through the main-stem of the river and an alternative migration route, the Stillwater Branch. The work was conducted prior to removal of two main-stem dams and operational changes in hydropower facilities in the...
متن کاملMigration depth and residence time of juvenile salmonids in the forebays of hydropower dams prior to passage through turbines or juvenile bypass systems: implications for turbine-passage survival
Little is known about the three-dimensional depth distributions in rivers of individually marked fish that are in close proximity to hydropower facilities. Knowledge of the depth distributions of fish approaching dams can be used to understand how vulnerable fish are to injuries such as barotrauma as they pass through dams. To predict the possibility of barotrauma injury caused by pressure chan...
متن کاملResponse of seaward-migrating European eel (Anguilla anguilla) to manipulated flow fields
Anthropogenic structures (e.g. weirs and dams) fragment river networks and restrict the movement of migratory fish. Poor understanding of behavioural response to hydrodynamic cues at structures currently limits the development of effective barrier mitigation measures. This study aimed to assess the effect of flow constriction and associated flow patterns on eel behaviour during downstream migra...
